John P. O’Connell- Earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M University. John began his Extension career with Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service, where he served as an Assistant County Agent for 4-H and Marine. After getting his feet wet in the wetlands of Louisiana he returned to Texas to assume the position of marine Extension agent in Calhoun County. John has over 29 years of experience with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and Texas Sea Grant as an Extension Educator. He currently serves as the Coastal and Marine Resources Extension agent for Brazoria County.
John began the Texas Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program (TxMRRP) in 2004 and currently coordinates the program. John’s interest and commitment to marine education has led him to become a member of the National Marine Educators Association since 2000. John is Texas’ co-lead on the Gulf of Mexico Alliance-Education and Engagement steering committee; a member of the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Ocean Observing System-Outreach and Education Council (GCOOS-OEC); and a member of the Sea Grant Educators Network.
In his free time, John enjoys kayaking, beachcombing, fishing, and volunteering his time educating others about Texas’ rich and diverse natural resources.
